PAFSO 2021 Photo Contest Results

Winning submission: “Eating Out, Tokyo , Japan” by Tsung-Wei Lin.

The Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers (PAFSO) is pleased to announce the winners of its 2021 Annual Photo Contest held earlier this year.

The theme for this year’s contest, The Next Normal, was designed to give PAFSO members an opportunity to showcase their photographic skills in capturing what they saw emerging as our post-pandemic life? Our judges are interested in seeing through their eyes how the daily experience where they work and live is changing as the world begins its slow recovery from over a year of crisis.

Tsung-Wei Lin’s “Eating Out, Tokyo Japan” was awarded the first prize by this year’s jury.

“On an evening walk along a quiet street in Tokyo, I found two penguins standing on the sidewalk. As I approached, I discovered they were the sign for a little restaurant. The restaurant had created a little place outside with a plastic cover. This is often used in Japan to protect customers from rain and wind and is now also used for customers who do not want to sit inside the restaurant due to the COVID-19 situation,” Tsung-Wei explains. “From the penguins’ perspective, the scene seemed very cozy and even reassuring in this uncertain time. During the pandemic, it was so difficult for many such small businesses to survive and it was therefore good to see that this business was able to survive the turmoil caused by the pandemic. I sincerely hope that we will all reach ‘the next normal’ very soon.”

Second prize went to James Clark for his photograph entitled “Chill of a Mountain Sunrise, Dulce Nombre de Maria, El Salvador.” And “Le lecteur, Ottawa Canada” by Nicolas St-Pierre earned third prize.

Each winner will receive a gift certificate from Henry’s, a major Canadian photo equipment and electronics retailer ($150 for the first prize, $100 for the second prize and $50 for the third prize).

Honourable mentions this year were awarded to Antoine Nouvet, Aslin Unlusoy, Joshua Hodgson, Lara Engel, Bob Paquin, Corina Pinto, and Erin Koenig.

Once again, images from this year’s contest will be featured in the 2022 PAFSO desk calendar.

Congratulations to all of our winners and honourable mention recipients!
