The Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers (PAFSO) is pleased to announce the winners of its 2019 Annual Photo Contest held earlier this year.
The theme for this year’s contest, The View From Here, was designed to give PAFSO members an opportunity to showcase their photographic skills in capturing their unique experience of living and working as Foreign Service officers in photographs taken from all around the world.
Corina Pinto’s “Sky Above, Sand Below, Peace Within, Erg Chebbi, Morocco” was awarded the first prize by this year’s jury. “When I took this photo, ‘the view from here’ was, quite literally, the view from atop a camel, looking ahead at my partner as he looked back at me,” she recalls. “But now, I see the breathtaking sand dunes and traditional indigo threads; I smell mint leaves and steaming tagines; I hear camels groaning and dust blowing. And I can’t help but think of all the exchanges with locals it took to get us there. In the end, more important than the destination, are the people you meet along the way.”
Second prize went to Julie Sirois for her photograph entitled “Sky Knight, Al Fursan, United Arab Emirates.” And “Junior Horse Jockey, Mongolia” by Kimberly Phillips earned third prize.
Each winner will receive a gift certificate from Henry’s, a major Canadian photo equipment and electronics retailer ($150 for the first prize, $100 for the second prize and $50 for the third prize).
Honourable mentions were awarded to Gurvir Khosa, Joshua Hodgson, Chris Gravel, Karim Amégan, Claudio Ramirez, Melissa Tam, Nicolas St-Pierre and Sabine Nolke.
Once again, images from this year’s contest will be used in the 2020 PAFSO desk calendar. Some will also be featured in a future edition of bout de papier Magazine, Canada’s magazine of diplomacy and Foreign Service.
Congratulations to all of our winners and honourable mention recipients!
