PAFSO 2018 Photo Contest Results

Winning submission: Erin Koenig’s “The Calm After the Storm, Ottawa, Canada”

The Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers (PAFSO) is pleased to announce the winners of its seventh Annual Photo Contest held earlier this year.

The theme for this year’s contest, A Day in the Life, was designed to give PAFSO members an opportunity to showcase their photographic skills in capturing their unique experience of living and working as Foreign Service officers in photographs taken from all around the world.

Erin Koenig’s “The Calm After the Storm, Ottawa, Ontario” was awarded the first prize by this year’s jury. “I snapped this photo from my office window one evening in September,” she recalls. “I was captivated by the extraordinary colour and texture of the sky above Parliament Hill — and totally unaware that several devastating tornados had just touched down in National Capital Region. As Foreign Service Officers, it is not uncommon for us to support our overseas colleagues as they face emergencies. In this case, it was colleagues from around the world who were suddenly reaching back to Ottawa to check on the safety of those of us based at headquarters. In hindsight, it’s impossible now for me to look at this image — a quick photo taken at the end of a long day — without seeing everything that came after, and the beauty of it all.”

Second prize went to Marie-Danielle Cantin for her photograph entitled “Colourful Doors, Soho Building, Tokyo, Japan.” And “¿Cómo te llamas?” by Laura Sparks earned third prize.

Each winner will receive a gift certificate from Henry’s, a major Canadian photo equipment and electronics retailer ($150 for the first prize, $100 for the second prize and $50 for the third prize).

Honourable mentions were awarded to Laura Atar, Nicolas St-Pierre, Gurvir Khosa, Pearl Wierenga, Tsung-Wei Ling and Kimberly Phillips.

Once again, images from this year’s contest will be used in the 2019 PAFSO desk calendar. Some will also be featured in a future edition of bout de papier Magazine, Canada’s magazine of diplomacy and Foreign Service.

Congratulations to all of our winners and honourable mention recipients!
