PAFSO 2017 Photo Contest Results

Winning submission: Loc Pham’s “A Head for Business, Yangon (Rangoon), Burma (Myanmar)”

The Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers (PAFSO) is pleased to announce the winners of its seventh Annual Photo Contest held earlier this year.

The theme for this year’s contest, A Day in the Life, was designed to give PAFSO members an opportunity to showcase their photographic skills in capturing their unique experience of living and working as Foreign Service officers in photographs taken from all around the world.

Loc Pham’s “A Head for Business” was awarded the first prize by this year’s jury. The picture, taken at a train station in Yangon, depicts a young Myanmar lady going about her daily business of selling mangoes to commuters. She is wearing thanaka, a yellowish paste made from ground bark commonly used by Myanmar people as a cosmetic and for protection from the sun. “As a Trade Commissioner, the picture has special meaning for me,” explains Loc. “It demonstrates that inspiring people exist within even the most seemingly ordinary lives: by being economically engaged and operating a microenterprise, she is contributing in her own ways to Myanmar’s economic reintegration into regional and global markets. In a country where both male and female entrepreneurs face many obstacles, she can hold her head high – and she is.”

Second prize went to Nicolas St-Pierre for his photograph entitled “Zipping Through Life, Tokyo, Japan.” And “Falconry/Fauconerie, Abu Dhabi, UAE” by Clarie Caillo Cholley earned third prize.

Each winner will receive a gift certificate from Henry’s, a major Canadian photo equipment and electronics retailer ($150 for the first prize, $100 for the second prize and $50 for the third prize).

Honourable mentions were awarded to David Kyffin, Gurvir Khosa, Kimberly Phillips, Amy Bundy, Joël Monfils, Robert Bunbury, Tsung-Wei Lin and Matt Friesen.

Once again, images from this year’s contest will be used in the 2018 PAFSO desk calendar. Some will also be featured in a future edition of bout de papier Magazine, Canada’s magazine of diplomacy and Foreign Service.

Congratulations to all of our winners and honourable mention recipients!
