WE’RE HIRING: Summer Student Assistant

The Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers (PAFSO) is looking for a summer student to work as an Assistant working with the editorial team of bout de papier magazine as well as with PAFSO’s advocacy team.

The key role of the Assistant is to create a digital archive of our magazine by scanning print copies of the magazine and cataloguing the articles in a database which will include summaries and the main topics and themes of each issue.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with excellent editing skills and a strong and demonstrated interest in journalism, foreign policy, and international affairs. Excellent written communications skills in either English or French are essential, and bilingualism is an asset. PAFSO welcomes expression of interest from qualified members of equity-seeking groups.

DETAILS
Duties
The position will report to the Geneal Manager and the duties include:

  • Scan, catalogue, and organize a digital archive of back issues of bout de papier Create and maintain a database to include summaries and the main topics and themes of each issue.
  • While scanning, identify high-quality articles for inclusion in the Dip Notes book to commemorate the 60th anniversary of PAFSO.
  • Search through publicly available and free photo databases, as well as images stored in the PAFSO office (e.g. from the photo contest/calendar) to create an image database that could be used for future articles in bout de papier
  • Search publicly available archives and other material for declassified External/Foreign Affairs/GAC material that could be included in the Dip Notes book.
  • Review PAFSO’s YouTube channel recordings and identify short segments for use on social media.

 

Dates of the contract
Immediately to 25 August 2024.

Location and conditions
The position is based in Ottawa, Ontario, but work may be performed remotely, and the successful candidate is expected to provide their own workstation, computer, scanner and internet connection. The position is hybrid, however, the successful candidate will need to be present at the downtown Ottawa office as required.

Hours of work
Full time, 37.5 hours per week. Flexible hours are possible, but the successful candidate must maintain core hours between 9:00 and 17:00 Ottawa time Monday through Friday.

Pay
$29.05/hour

Qualifications
Undergraduate study in a relevant field such as journalism, history, literature or communications with a demonstrated interest in international affairs, geopolitics, and foreign policy.

Personal suitability
A self-starter with excellent editing skills and a strong and demonstrated interest in journalism, foreign policy, and international affairs. Excellent written communications skills in either English or French are essential, and bilingualism is an asset.

Eligibility
This position is open to Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents. Regular PAFSO members and the spouses or dependents of current Executive Committee members are not eligible.
